Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding

There are many options if you want to get to know the friendly horses at Camp Carolina! Our current herd of horses have undergone extensive training to ensure that they are safe and have the ability to cater to all our riders, from beginner to advanced. Our Equestrian Facility consists of a 19 horse barn, tack and feed room, a riding ring with jumps, plus several riding trails on camp property.

Our counselors' main aim is to make horseback riding fun and safe and to also teach campers how to take care of the horses and be responsible for the trails we use. All campers have the opportunity to attend a half day “wrangler” clinic where they learn how to tie, groom, and saddle their horses before mounting up and mastering all the basic riding skills. When the campers are ready they can choose to go on an in camp trail ride with their friends or to master more difficult skills such as cantering and jumping or simply spending more time with the horses with one of our very popular “pimp my ride” clinics or in camp treasure hunt on horseback.

We also give our campers the option to get out of camp and enjoy the trails of Pisgah Forest and Dupont Forest on Horseback while riding with their camp buddies. We take the boys on half-day and full-day rides, which include a picnic lunch and swim in one of the lakes.

The highlight for horse-crazy campers is the end of session “prize trip” where the boys spend the night camping out under the stars with their new favorite horse close by. Boys help feed and water their horse and then spend the day exploring the many all day trail rides that Pisgah Forest offers. After a long day riding, the boys love helping prepare dinner and then making sure their horses are comfortable for the night before cooking s’mores and telling stories around the campfire.
