In-Camp Staff

Hello! My name is Joe, and I'm from a town called Penarth in South Wales. I've lived here all my life, and I've been curious to explore different countries ever since I can remember.

I love travelling! I've been to lots of different countries, including America, Canada, Indonesia, and Malaysia. On every adventure I've been on, there has been a lot of different activities which I have done, including scuba diving, hiking, fishing, white water rafting, and archery. These occasional activities have developed into passionate hobbies of mine.

For example, I did scuba diving for the first time in Turkey in 2016, when I was nine years old, and since then, I've enjoyed going on underwater adventures on holidays throughout the years. In 2024, I attained my PADI open water scuba diving certification, and I am planning to use it after my placement at Camp Carolina.

As you can probably tell, I'm a huge fan of water sports, and I also really enjoy playing team-based sports such as football (soccer). I've played football for around twelve years, ten of which I played for my local football club, where I made the friends that I have today. I still play football every week, but in a non-competitive, more relaxed setting with my friends.

I have a lot of experience in playing football and building connections in a team. I'm appreciative of my football coaches who pushed me to my best potential throughout all the years.

For the past three months, I've been coaching the under-5s football team for my old football club to give back to the community and provide the children with a role model just as my football coaches did with me.

What are you most proud of/biggest achievement in life so far?
I'm most proud of attaining my scuba diving certification in 2024. It's the biggest achievement I've made in my life so far and has impacted me massively through developing crucial skills, such as communication, leadership, being reactive and situationally aware.
What is your favourite hobby/sport/thing to do during your free time?
My favourite hobby of mine is playing football, not only because I play with my closest friends but also because I enjoy the hard-working, strenuous and active game. We always have a good laugh playing football, and at the same time, it keeps me fit and healthy.
What is your favourite thing about working with children?
My favourite thing about working with children is two-fold. Firstly, I love seeing the development of skills. As a football coach, I love to see that my work is benefiting the children, and it gives me the feedback that I need to understand how I'm performing as a coach. Secondly, I love bonding with the children that I coach. They can be very funny, and even though it can be hard to grasp all of their attention, the setting is very relaxed, and we all have a good time during the training sessions.
What impact are you most excited to make this year at CCB?
I'm most excited to be able to contribute to giving the children at camp the best summer that I can hope for. I'm excited to be able to facilitate these fun activities for them to participate in and to build bonds with campers and camp staff.
What goal or camp philosophy do you really want your campers to learn this summer?
For me, the best piece of feedback I've received was given by my mum when I was very young. Admittedly, I used to have a horrid attitude towards football and other sports, especially if we were losing in a competitive game. My mum told me that it doesn't matter how good a player you are, but the key to being a good player is a positive attitude. This advice has always stuck with me right into adulthood, and I apply it to sport, work and all aspects of my life. So at camp this summer, I'd like to teach my campers that a positive attitude is the most important thing a person can have, regardless of skill or capability.
