Surfs up at Camp Carolina! The surfing program actually starts off on the CCB Lake where boys who have completed the fifth grade participate in a paddle and swim test to prove that they are strong enough swimmers to enter the surf.
They also learn the basic skills of surfing, such as duck diving and rolling under waves and then standing up on the “beach” at Camp Carolina. We then pack up our purpose built surf trailer to carry our fleet of soft long boards, rash vests and coolers, and hit the road!
We take the boys to Folly Beach which is about a 4 hour drive away. The boys spend 2 nights camping out and rising early for the best morning surf. The counselors teach them the importance of surf awareness and etiquette before they get in the water for hours of fun and perfecting their technique on the waves. During the heat of the day the boys may go to the Charleston Aquarium or watch a movie at the local cinema.
Our surfing counselors come from all over the world and bring with them a wealth of surfing knowledge that they are passionate about passing on to the campers. They spend time at Folly Beach before the campers arrive so they know where all the best surf spots are and ensure the most exciting, safest experience possible.
